Safety Precautions

Batteries emit explosive gases during charging. Areas where charging takes place must be well ventilated. Always wear safety glasses when working on and around batteries. The hydrogen gas produced in batteries is extremely flammable. Keep other ignition sources such as sparks, flames, burning cigarettes, welding, friction, and static electricity discharge away from batteries. Otherwise, the gas may ignite and explode.

When removing a battery from a vehicle, first disconnect the negative (-) terminal, and when installing the battery in the vehicle, first connect the positive (+) terminal.

Do not directly connect or disconnect circuits during charging. To avoid sparks, always turn off chargers and testing devices first when connecting or disconnecting cable terminals.

Do not tilt wet-cell batteries more than 45°C to any side. Batteries contain sulfuric acid which can cause severe burns; in case of contact with acid, wash the affected area with plenty of water. If acid gets into your eyes, seek medical attention immediately after washing. Before connecting a frozen battery to a charger, wait for it to warm up to 15°C. Do not install the battery in the vehicle without ensuring that the battery voltage is in the correct direction. Keep batteries and electrolyte away from children. When jump-starting a vehicle; first connect the cables to the positive (+) terminals of both batteries, then connect the other cable to the negative (-) terminals of the helper and disabled vehicles. The connection should be made as far as possible from the chassis where the ground cable is connected. After starting the vehicle, reverse the process.

Storage

FOLLOW SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Ca-Ca maintenance-free wet-charged accumulators can be stored for 6 months without losing their charge, while hybrid batteries can be stored for 3 months. Batteries will be damaged if stored in a discharged state. All batteries should be stored in a cool and dry place, and wet accumulators should also be stored in an upright position and with separators (e.g., styrofoam) placed between them if they are to be stacked. Battery tops must be clean.

The FIRST IN FIRST OUT principle should be followed. This should be taken into account during storage.

Recharging requirement for Calcium Ca-Ca wet accumulators:

  • Once every 6 months if the average storage temperature is below 27°C (*)
  • Once every 3 months if the average storage temperature is above 27°C (*)
  • Recharging is also required when the open-circuit voltage of the battery drops to 12.4 volts. This method is an alternative to options (1) and (2).
  • For hybrid wet-charged accumulators, these periods are approximately 1/2.

During charging, do not allow acid to overflow or the temperature to exceed 52°C. If the temperature rises, reduce the charging current or discontinue charging until the battery cools down. High charging temperature damages the battery.

Testing Procedures Observe Safety Precautions.

When inspecting a battery, always check for the following before testing:

  • Loose, detached, or broken terminals
  • Cracked or broken case or cover
  • Missing, broken, or clogged caps, blocked gas vents; if the battery is not damaged, proceed to the next step.

Measuring Charge Level: Measure the open-circuit voltage with a precise voltmeter. NOTE: Never measure the state of charge of a battery that has just been removed from a charger, whether in or out of the vehicle. In this case, there is a misleadingly high surface charge. To remove the surface charge, discharge the battery with 15 x 15 A or, if in the vehicle, by keeping the high beams on for 15 seconds.

If the state of charge is:

  • At least 75% charged (approximate voltage = 12.4 *V), proceed to the load test.
  • Less than 75% charged, charge the accumulator according to the given method before the load test. Voltage and densities may vary depending on the accumulator's design.

Load Test: The battery test under load and the evaluation of the results depend on the system of the devices used. The load test and result evaluation are performed according to the device's instructions.
Vehicle Electrical System Check: When installing a new accumulator or when a faulty accumulator arrives, check the vehicle's battery-related electrical system. The most common error that can occur in a vehicle is overcharging or undercharging. Measure whether the alternator output voltage is between 13.8 – 14.4 volts for hybrid batteries with a normal battery and at full throttle; for Ca-Ca batteries, a voltage output between 13.8-14.8V is suitable. (In a 12V vehicle)
NOTE: In vehicles where electronic circuits and coding may lose memory when the battery is removed, prevent system interruption by engaging a second battery or a special device before removing the accumulator. CHARGING PROCESS OBSERVE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS In batteries with removable caps, the charging time at 20°C - 35°C depends on the electrolyte density in all cells being 1.280 g/cm3. When this value is reached, charging is stopped. After resting for half an hour, the electrolyte level in the battery is adjusted to the maximum line, wiped clean, and installed in the vehicle. Wet-charged batteries that have been stored or discharged batteries received from customers are charged at the currents and durations given in the tables below according to their charge levels. However, in used batteries, the desired density may not be reached. In these batteries, if the corrected density in the last two hours of charging has not changed, the charging is considered sufficient. In fully sealed accumulators where the cap cannot be opened, charging is applied according to the voltage values.

  • Make sure the charger is off.
  • Determine the charge level of the battery.
  • Connect the battery to the charger. Positive-positive, negative-negative. Be careful not to reverse the polarity.
  • Select the desired current and voltage values on the charger according to its features and usage instructions, and connect for charging.
  • After charging, turn off the charger first before disconnecting the terminals.
  • Measure the open-circuit voltage and cell densities to determine if additional charging is needed. You can charge multiple batteries of the same capacity in parallel at the same time.

BATTERY SELECTION AND INSTALLATION Among the parameters to consider when selecting an accumulator; dimensions, cold cranking current, and capacity values are the most important selection criteria. For wet-charged batteries in storage, if the average daily temperature is below 4°C and the open-circuit voltage is 12.50 Volts or below, recharge according to the method above. If the ambient temperature is high and the open-circuit voltage drops to 12.40 volts or below, recharge again according to the given method. Before removing the old battery, mark the cables as +/- for proper connection to the new battery. Measure the battery voltage value and direction to ensure accuracy, carefully check and clean the cable connections and battery tray. Install the new accumulator and attach and tighten the connections. Connect the positive (+) cable first. Then connect the negative (-) grounded cable. Tighten carefully. Be especially careful when tightening the battery terminals from the side, as overtightening can damage the terminals.

ONLY DISTILLED WATER SHOULD BE ADDED TO ACCUMULATORS WITH LOW ELECTROLYTE LEVELS.
